Biodiesel (a bio fuel) is a renewable fuel produced from vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil, sunflower seed oil, soybean oil, hemp oil and Jatropha oil or sometimes from fats. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended with petroleum diesel to create a biodieselblend.

Biodiesel has been demonstrated to have significant environmental benefits in terms of
decreased global warming impacts, reduced emissions, greater energy independence and a
positive impact on agriculture. Various studies have estimated that the use of 1 kg of biodiesel results in a reduction of some 3 kg of CO2, which
is 65%-90% less in relation to conventional diesel. Biodiesel is extremely low in sulphur, has a high lubricity and fast
biodegradability. These are all advantages, which have been confirmed by various EC Commission programmes and
tests of independent research institutes. Increased use of biodiesel in Europe represents an important step for the European Union to meet its emission
reduction target as agreed under the Kyoto agreement.
Furthermore, by using biodiesel and thus reducing pollutant emissions, we alleviate various human health problems.

Biodiesel can be used as a transport fuel in diesel engines with little or no
modifications. Whether blends of 20% biodiesel with 80% petroleum diesel can be used in diesel engines, depends on
your car-manufacturer. Please ask you car-dealer if your engine supprts B20 biodiesel. Biodiesel is also used as efficient heating oil.

To use pure (100%) Biodiesel many engines require certain modifications to avoid maintenance and
performance problems.
The use of biodiesel can extend the life of diesel engines because it is more lubricating. It
also replaces the exhaust odour of petroleum diesel with a more pleasant smell.

Belgium?
When will we be able to buy biodiesel in Belgium?
Belgium started its biodieselprogram November 1st 2006. However
it is only in 2008 that the full 5% incorporated will really kick off.
